To aide operation, the weight of the glass panel is usually counterweighted by a heavy steel, lead, or cast iron sash concealed within the window frame. The sash weight is attached to the window by a sash cord which runs over a pulley wheel at the top of the window, although spring balances are occasionally used. Sash windows may be fitted with hinges to allow the window to be locked into hinges on one side while the counterbalance on the other site is removed, allowing the window to be opened for cleaning and housework.

The name "hung sash window" is more usual in the United States, and refers to a double hung window with two sashes that can move up and down in the frame. A single hung window has two sashes but normally the top sash is fixed and only the bottom sash slides.

A sash window or hung sash window is made of 1 or even more movable panels or "sashes" that form a window frame to hold sheets of glass which are often distanced from other panes (or "lights") by thin muntin bars. Although any window with this style of glazing is considered "a sash", the term is used almost exclusively to refer to the glazed panels are opened by sliding vertically, or horizontally in a way known as a "Yorkshire light" or sliding sash. Sash windows are common in Europe and former areas including the United States and many other nations. The design of the sash window is credited to the English scientist and inventor, Robert Hook. The oldest known examples of sash windows were fitted in England in the 1670s, for example at Ham House, London.

The sash window is often seen in Georgian and Victorian houses, and the normal arrangement has three panes across by two up on each of two sashes, giving a "6 over 6" panel window, although this is by no means a rule. Innumerable late Victorian and Edwardian town houses were built in England using standard sash window units approximately 4 feet (1.2m) in width, but older, hand-made units could be any size.
